Sonopress, a leading manufacturer of storage media, commissioned its third machine for the production of EcoRecords at its Gütersloh site at the end of March. The EcoRecord is a revolutionary new form of Long-Playing (LP) record, manufactured using recyclable polyethylene terephthalate (PET) instead of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) as the base material. An injection molding process requiring neither natural gas nor steam is used to produce the discs. This reduces the environmental impact of the manufacturing process by up to 85 percent compared to conventional methods.
Sven Deutschmann, Managing Director of Sonopress, is delighted with the continuously increasing demand for the climate-friendly LPs: “With the EcoRecord, we have hit the mark with our clients from the music industry - from major to independent labels. Companies, artists and consumers are increasingly looking for environmentally friendly alternatives and we can hardly keep up with production.” For this reason, the company has now put another production facility into operation. According to Deutschmann, Sonopress is now able to produce up to three million PET records per year.
The EcoRecord has been around for just over a year. In March 2024, after months of preparation, Sonopress produced and delivered the premiere order from Warner Music Group (WMG): the first joint album by Liam Gallagher & John Squire. Since then, numerous other artists from various genres, from rock to pop to classical music, have launched sustainable LPs together with Sonopress.
